The fifth edition of the Joint military exercise ‘Sagarmatha Friendship’ between the Nepali Army and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) began on Sunday (07 September 2025) in Kathmandu. According to a statement issued by Nepal’s army, during the 10-day joint military exercise, knowledge will be exchanged between the two armies on disaster management, United Nations Peace Mission and other subjects including prevention of terrorism.
This joint military exercise is being conducted in turn in Nepal and China since the year 2017. The statement said, “The Nepali army has been participating in such bilateral and multilateral military exercises and professional campaigns with all the friends to increase its capacity in various fields.”
‘Surya Kiran’ military exercise between India and Nepal
According to a local media reports, the Nepali Army has also regularly conducted joint military exercises with the forces of many other countries including the United States. It has been said in the news that Nepal and India conduct military exercises called ‘Surya Kiran’ every year.

The first edition military exercise between Nepal-China this year
According to the news, the first edition of ‘Sagarmatha Friendship’ was held in Kathmandu in April 2017. It said that the second edition of this joint military exercise was held in September 2018 in Chengdu and the third edition in Nepal in August-September 2019.
According to the news, Nepal-China joint military exercises were postponed from 2020 to 2022 in view of Kovid-19 epidemic. It states that the fourth edition of ‘Sagarmatha Friendship’ was held in September-October 2024 in Chongking city of Southwest China.
